Great Lakes vs. Catskills Treasure Hunt Results

On Friday, December 9th, The Great Lakes Purple Llamas defeated the Catskills Blue Beetles in the Treasure Hunt Challenge! The competition at Test Center's Nujel'm chessboard was fierce as the newcomer Llamas destroyed the Beetles' hopes of a hat-trick.

For much of the match, Catskills was slightly ahead. Great Lakes's bad luck in pulling a swamp map for level four turned out to be good luck for the sixth map, as it brought them back to a familiar area. As the teams returned for the final maps, EM Adris said it was "All down to this final chest!" Catskills found their chest first, Great Lakes a moment later. Catskills went with a tamer split to take down multiple guardians at once, but that left some Beetles searching for a healer. The audience waiting at the chessboard was on the edge of their seats as EM Sangria did a running countdown of the items remaining for each side. Great Lakes returned first, to cheers from the spectators!

Pack Rats of Great Lakes said, "Was a close one. Was a good fight." Llewen Faerlyght of Catskills said, "We just had some bad luck. It happens," and promised, "We'll be back." EM Elizabella congratulated both sides on their teamwork. EM Barnaby said, "It was a tight race by two good teams. A couple bad bounces both ways." Members of both teams shook hands and thanked each other for a good battle. EM Malachi summed it up, "This race has shown the spirit of two titan teams."

Imbuing Changes

Imbuing UI Redesign

The design of the initial imbuing gump has been changed to match the rest of the imbuing UI.

Two new options have been added to the initial imbuing gump menu:

Imbue Last Properties - This option uses the last used property/intensity combination, and allows you to target a new item to imbue with that combination. It will check to make sure the new item is allowed to be imbued with that combination.

Unravel Container - This option replaces the functionality of the unravel bag. It allows you to choose any container in your backpack, and will unravel any items contained inside. This is a recursive operation, so it will unravel items contained inside of sub-containers located inside of the targeted container. If there are any special material items inside, you will be asked if you wish to proceed.

The design of the property selection gump has been changes to better organize the available properties for the targeted item.

On the left side of the gump is a list of categories for the available properties for the targeted item.

On the right side of the gump is a list of properties in the currently selected category.

The design of the imbuing confirmation gump has been redesigned for clarity and ease of use.

The gump layout has changed to better organize the information on the current imbuing attempt.

New buttons have been added that allow the intensity to be changed in steps of plus or minus 10 intensity per button press.

Changes to Imbuing Skill Gain

Imbuing focus value changed from 50 to 60. This means that you can gain skill from a wider range of difficulties.

The overall chance for skill gains has been increased.

There are now bonuses to skill gain chance when performing an imbue that requires relic fragments or rare item ingredients (monster drops, etc.). The bonus is per ingredient used, so more difficult imbuing attempts that use more ingredients will increase the chance for skill gain.

The number of times a single item can be imbued before it has diminished skill gain has been increased from 10 to 20.

The unraveling skill gain cap has been removed.

The difficulty value passed into the skill gain system is now roughly equal to the total intensity of the item * 2.

Unravel focus value changed from 50 to 70. This means that you can gain skill from a wider range of difficulties.

As with imbuing an item, there is now a bonus chance to gain skill based on the number of ingredients returned during the unravel attempt. The quality, and to a lesser extent the quantity, of the ingredients returned give a bonus to the chance to gain skill.

Unraveling Changes

The 50 intensity requirement to get multiple ingredients has been removed.

The type and quantity of ingredients returned from a successful unravel attempt has been modified so that in general, it returns more materials on average per unravel attempt.

Except for items with a total intensity of 1 to 49 intensity, which always give exactly 1 magical residue, there is now a chance to receive a bonus ingredient.

Unraveling single items and unraveling multiple items via the Unravel Container feature now use the same process, which eliminates any difference in results between the two methods.

Unravel bags will no longer be sold, and existing unravel bags will lose their current functionality, as it has been incorporated into the initial imbuing menu.

Special Material Item Changes

Items made from or enhanced with special materials can now be imbued.
- This only applies to new items created after this change.

Artifacts can now be imbued.
- These follow the same rules and restrictions as other items. This means most are unable to be imbued, as they already exceed the property and intensity limits of the imbuing system, but many of them can be improved through the imbuing system.

Items that are part of armor sets are not allowed to be imbued, as the set bonuses combined with the normal imbuing restrictions would allow for the creation of ultra-powerful items.

The bonus to durability is not considered in the total intensity of an item. Since some special materials add durability as an item property, we did not want those special materials to be less attractive in combination with the imbuing system.

    - Xenrr’s Fishing Pole
    - Barreraak’s Ring
    - Halloween Costumes
    - Incognito
    - Savage Kin Body Paint
- Functional effects are spells and spell-like effects that generally have ancillary effects (e.g. the brittle skin effect from Medusa)
  - Prioritization (highest to lowest)
    - Petrification / Brittle Skin
    - Spells of all schools
- Functional effects are higher priority than cosmetic effects, with exceptions:
  - Some “easter egg” effects are cosmetic but override the visual appearance from functional effects
- Characters can now have multiple cosmetic effects on at the same time. For example:
  - A player can now equip Barreraak’s Ring while wearing savage paint
  - The avatar will take on the goblin appearance but will still have all of the effects of the savage paint (per visual priorities listed above)
  - If the paint is removed (or explodes) while in goblin form:
    - The avatar still looks like a goblin so long as the goblin item remains equipped
    - Then when the goblin item is removed the avatar reverts to its original body and skin tone
- Characters are still limited to having one functional effect on at a time
  - For example, you still cannot cast Animal Form while polymorphed
- Characters may have one high priority effect and multiple low priority effects on at once. For example:
  - While holding the goblin fishing pole, and wearing a Halloween costume, the player may now cast Animal Form
  - The Animal Form effect takes priority until gone
  - The avatar’s appearance will then revert to that of a goblin
  - If the fishing pole is unequipped, the character’s appearance then reverts to the Halloween costume

We’ve recently successfully launched UO’s 8th Expansion, bringing back programs that independent boards said would never occur … Oh, and I’m not certain if you noticed, but there are more people playing Ultima Online again every day. I know. I have our subscriber numbers on refresh. It makes me smile.

I heard you really liked Halloween. Yes, Sakkarah and the rest of the folks supporting her on live got rid of “Death or Treat” this year. She’s got a few nice things lined up for the holidays. Expect to see more on the holiday publish in the next week.

More importantly, something I know you have been waiting for – engineering has been working on speedhacking and 3rd party program detection. We’re closer each day to a solution, but are not publishing it until it’s solid.

Finally, as a former Air Force Officer and graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, I hope everyone found time to show their appreciation for those currently serving in our Armed Forces as we celebrated Veteran’s Day earlier this week. We here at Mythic make games. We don’t defend against all enemies foreign and domestic. We make a worlds where it’s possible to be the conquerors and almost king. Yes we are still committed to improving the Enhanced Client experience. Currently, we are focusing on improving the stability and performance of this client. There will also be a few other goodies for the Enhanced Client in the next publish.

What’s the deal with all those crystals from the Halloween quest (especially the blue one)? Should we keep them or ditch them?

You should trade all your red crystals for costumes as Tomas will no longer accept crystals once the Halloween event ends on November 15th. You might want to hold on to your costumes (even duplicates) as they may be of interest to someone else in the not too distant future! You can keep your gold crystals for as long as you wish and summon the Harbinger only when you see fit. There is no deadline on using them. The blue crystals will be of use in the next story arc. They will not be essential, but will definitely benefit to those who have them.

Is there an ETA yet for when the veteran reward character statues will be fixed-up so that we can set them out again?

We put in a fix for the statues in the last publish, these should be safe to replace now without fear of losing them.

Well, we never like to say “never”, but honestly we aren’t thinking along those lines at all. Even though the early Ultima games had laser pistols and space ships, Ultima Online started as fantasy and is likely to remain that way for the foreseeable future.

Now that there is a huge volcano sitting there, are all my Fire Island T-maps trashed?
The Volcano shouldn’t affect Treasure maps since it came out of the water not the surrounding land mass. Most messages in a bottle had been addressed, however there does appear to be a small handful that may still be affected and we will be looking into those.

"How do I make my resists go back to normal after I cast Protection, Magic Reflection, or Reactive Armor?"

The vets will probably skip past this one, but QA has been getting quite a few bug reports spurred by these spells - it seems like people don't quite understand how they work. Which is fair, because they're the only spells in the game that work the way they do, and it's easy to forget when you have one on.

These three spells are "toggle" spells, meaning that casting them is like flipping a switch - it turns the effect on, or turns it off. The effect lasts through death and even through logging off. If you notice your resists are altered and you can't tell why, check the descriptions of the spells (see the links above) and figure out which spell is in effect. Then cast the spell on yourself again - or use a scroll, or get a friend to do it if you need to. That will turn the spell back off and your resists will go back to normal.

One thing to watch out for is Arch Protection - it's the same as Protection, but it can be cast on all party members in a certain radius, so it's easy to have it cast on you accidentally if you spend time partied with mages. Casting regular Protection should turn it off, though.

Background or exposure to game development processes in the industry

If you place a mouse hole on top of another mouse hole, the void thus created shatters the stability of the local reality metaframework and the holes will be removed to an orthagonal dimension.In other words, don't stack two mouse holes on top of one another or they will go poof!

“My Lords! Ladies! Please,” he implored the assemblage, “we must stand together!”
The Royal Council, representing the nobility from every shore of Britannia, had gathered again in Castle British. Events of late were chaotic, dividing their time and resources away from each other. The militia of a half dozen cities had been sent scurrying across the land, trying vainly to meet each new threat – often only to arrive just as their foes departed.
Even the Elves of Heartwood had been attacked. A single man adorned in dragonscale armor had appeared in their midst, and, for all reports, had done nothing until he had been provoked. “Oh, but what a response,” Francesco inwardly mourned, noting the casualties and devastation wrought high up in their sacred wood.

“Seems perfectly reasonable to me,” a woman spoke, standing to counter him, “It's your fault, after all, is it not?”

After all he had done, tried to do, won and lost, he knew they condemned him. For an experiment gone awry, for rumors of the Shadowlords loosed on their world, and for the ceaseless attacks on their sovereign territories.

“And if it is, I will bear it! But we must act as one!”

The noblewoman leaned forward over the table and hissed, “What good is acting together when we have nothing left to give! Our cities, not yours. Our cities are the ones besieged!”

“Let us hear our lord the treasurer!” called Ambassador Casca.

Voices rose in a torrent of dissent, arguments erupting around the table. Francesco stretched out his hand and, surprisingly, they quieted. Francesco had the answer, they thought. He always seemed to know what to do.

Francesco did know. This was the moment he had been waiting for. He would soon speak, proposing that the larger cities volunteer their own local militias to serve with the kingdom's, creating a military force the likes Britannia hadn't seen since the wars of Lord British's time. They would rush to the defense of the smaller townships and secure the hearts, minds, and, most importantly, the lives of the oft neglected people.

Britannia would be stronger that ever. In a way, their struggles and conflicts had at last offered them a chance to heal into a stronger nation, even without the heroes and legends of the past.

Someone screamed.

Francesco looked down at the shining blade protruding from his chest. It was transparent, with small rivulets of crimson blood streaming down the edges, distorting the image of his feet like glass. Glass... He opened his mouth in silent surprise, the blade shattered, and darkness rushed in from the corners of his vision.

Swords were drawn. The nobles rushed, at first, against the invaders cloaked in their dark robes. Panic set in after the third or fourth man died, impaled on a breaking sword, or sliced apart with ease by the merciless and silent enemy.

The guards were long dead. The doors of the chamber too far away to escape in time, but the survivors tried, desperate for escape, rushing together and falling together. The doors opened! The last noble crawled forward, looking upwards into the horrified face of a guard who had heard the confusion from outside.

The guard turned jumped back and turned.

Later, some would wonder whether the last sentry had cowered and attempted to run, or if he had bravely attempted to warn the castle. The assassins in their cloaks had little care for heroic tales, and simply slaughtered everyone who had seen them.

The Royal Council was no more.

Not Really the Five on Friday

Since the wonderful Jeremy is still out enjoying her vacation, I am going to do something different for a Friday. Because I am being a bit unconventional, I'm putting this under Community News instead. First a few announcements:

We have updated the patch notes for Publish 54 and added that the Gauntlets of Valor and Helm of Spirituality can be traded into Yonn.
There is a known issue with aggressive pets tamed since Publish 54 getting guard killed. We are currently looking into this. By "aggressive pets" we mean nightmares, dragons and other such pets.

Now, a normal FoF has a number of questions from the Community. Today, I am fielding questions from myself and about myself, since I have some experience in the subject matter.

"How did you get your start in UO?"

I originally started playing in the beta. At the time I was going back to college after a stint in the Army and had a particularly weak computer with a horrible connection, so I suffered greatly and let UO sit neglected for a time. After graduation and having found a job, I started back up properly with T2A on Baja with a bunch of friends I had met on The Vault. I'm still friends with the core group of people that started that guild and have played many different subsequent MMOs with them.

"What is your first UO memory?"

I had my brand new first character and was wandering out by the Brit Crossroads (wait for it). While enjoying the countryside I saw that one of my fellow travellers had died near the road. Running up to the corpse I realized I could look inside and loot the body of the fine cape there. No sooner had my character draped his new found cape around his shoulders than a group of foul bandits appeared around me from hiding and laid into me immediately. I was no match for this band of hooligans and was soon sent to the Land of Gray, "ooOOOooO-ing" all my way back to the healer. I learned my lessons quickly.

"What was the first event you participated in?"

The first event I remember well was part of the Followers of Armageddon and Juo'Nar storyline. We fought Juo'Nar out in the countryside in an epic battle. I managed to loot his cloak and hat (what is it with me and cloaks anyway?) As the event wound down, I realized far too late that the furtive figure running around the battlefield was a thief...and he had stolen all my mandrake root. Then, his guild brethren arrived, armed and ready for a fight. Unable to recall or cast many meaningful spells, I died fighting. Dying like this never bothered me, I had long ago learned not to carry anything I couldn't afford to lose. This threshold event, however, taught me the importance of setting up my pack to frustrate thieves.

"What was your first character?"

A classic mage. I built up that character the old-fashioned way. No macros or exploits for me by gosh. Just tons and tons and tons of hours spent casting spells. To pay for this spell-casting frenzy, my second character was a tailor. Leather gorgets anyone?

"What is one of your favorite memories about UO?"

One guild night we were playing late, doing a bunch of different dungeons. We took a brief break at Brit Bank. A friend of mine had only recently started playing the game. As a joke, I handed him some explosive potions and asked him to "toss" one to me, which he obligingly did (I honestly didn't expect him to do it). After the inevitable guard-kill and everyone around the bank insta-looting his corpse, I re-equipped him with new gear....laughing myself senseless all the time.
